Is SCA-8 common?

???

Hi Mistermom,

here in the GeneReview linked above you can read that SCA8 represent 2 - 5 % of autosomal dominant forms of inherided. ataxias This seems not so much. But there are especially in this disease many people who are affected by the mutation, but don`t have symptoms, because there is a reduced "penetrance" of the mutation. (To read in the link above).

Kind regards,

Akita

SCA8 occurs in most ethnic groups, and the worldwide prevalence of SCA8 is thought to be 1/100,000, (of all the SCAs, SCA8 disease has proven to be the most common in Finland).

There are some people who have SC8 who have this type of Ataxia who do not follow the perceived symptoms etc,. Whilst it is true there are certain symptoms common to all Ataxias, the severity of those symptoms is unique to the individual. I have SCA8 and though I do have a lot of symptoms in common with other Ataxias, some are in an advanced stage and some are nothing more than an inconvenience in my life. In fact my general approach to SCA8, is that it is an inconvenience to me and a hinderance to the way I wish to live my life! Here is some facts about SCA8 http://chazs1.webs.com/sca8.htm I published them on my website in the hope some people may find it useful.

I too find it to be mostly an "inconvienience".
