I have Spinocerebellar Degeneration, similar to MS, in some ways. This was diagnosed in 1989. This is a neurological disorder, resulting in poor coordination of the arms & legs. Ataxia is the main problem, although, dysarthria or slirred speech is also a result (in my case, it is.)
Anyway, when a person is in their youth, they may lose their balance, start to fall, but, they can catch themselves, before the fall. In my case, & many others with ataxia, when you may lose your balance, you can't usually catch yourself, but, fall all the way! With me, I usually fall at least 1 time a month.
Does anyone have a similar experience?

I have similar falling problems (also always dropping things). I used to be able to catch myself before falling but no more. It goes like this: I know I'm falling but cannot stop the fall, am only aware I'm falling and unable to do anything about it,what a feeling of helplessness that is!
I am new here and am thankful for this support forum because I am learning so much. I just had my first neurologist appointment on August 15, and he scheduled an MRI (it will be my 5th) and an EMG, plus an Ataxia Panel.
Earlier I had been referred to a neurosurgeon and he sent a note to my internist in which he mentioned a collection of fluid on the medulla oblongata. Thus, the internist then referred me to the neurologist. --SoBoVa

Comment by Stace Webb (Mr.) on February 5, 2011 at 9:00am Also, when I walk, it used to be w/o an aid, for several years after I was diagnosed, then, I used a cane, & starting in 2004, use a walker or rollator (modern version of the old-fashioned walker--I can sit on this, after locking the brakes.)
But, after seeing Dr. Tom Clouse's video, I hope to walk again, w/o any aid;
Also, I haven't been able to run since 1987.
Comment by Diane Scheitlin on February 4, 2011 at 4:15pm I was diagnosed with Spinal Celebellar Degeneration (I don't know if this the same or I misspelled it). Then about 2 yrs later Celiac Sprue. My neurologist checked for MS. Almost the same symptoms. I would fall and for no reason i would fall again. I couldn't walk a straight line. People who didn't know me thought i was drunk. I
used a cane first then a walker and now i'm in a wheelchair. I also have slurred speech and it's getting worse. People have a hard time understanding me. And some my falls were violent. They would be fast and hard. I never broke anything thank goodness. So whatever you do be careful.
I read an article on Ataxia in Living Without. It was like reading me. It nice talking to other people and knowing your not the only one struggling with what life throws you.
hi,
yes i fall even more than once a month, but it all depends on the circumstances. it depends on the atmosphere, stress, if i have my monthly, if i dont find something to hold on to, or if i have a cold or something. i was diagnosed in 2003 n i nwas ok but then i had my daughter in 2004 n my balance started getting worst. tthe peg,, weight kind of made my balance worst a little after the preg. now it gets worst by the day. sometimes i cant even go up n down stairs or up the side walk.

I've ben diagnosed with Cerebellar Atrophy, no genetic red flags from Athena Labs blood test. I fell and broke my knee cap a year ago, now I use a quad cane all the time,. I'll do what ever I can to not fall and get hurt again!

Comment by Carol Gow on January 27, 2011 at 3:54pm Hello Stace
My mobility is terrible. I use a wheelchair for the journey's end (I am usually taken by car). Indoors I use a walker to get around with. I think soon I will be in a chair at home. We shall see. I can usually stop myself from falling, in that I am lucky. That said I had two falls over the Christmas period. The first one I took 3/4 of an hour to get up. The bruises were technicolour - very fetching!!
I also have problems with my speech. My lanuage therapist said there are two areas, speech and voice. It appears that my problem is voice. The vocal cords are not doing what they should. The voice is also linked to breathing and it seems I don't do that properly either! I will practise/
Take care
Carol
