John "JC" Colyer

I feel a little better, then I have an Ataxia episode and get down again. Its a vicious cycle!

I 've been forcing myself to go out in public to try and socialize. When I start I feel good, then I get in a situation where my Ataxia makes it hard to function correctly and I become self conscious again. I realize everyone has there struggles and nobody is perfect but I feel the eyes of people saying ,"Whats wrong with him?". I limit myself because of it, its no way to live!

Hello J.C.
Sorry about the extra F in different. Sometimes the old fingers won't do as they are told, either that or dyslexic keyboard.I like to think it is the latter!!!!
Take care

Hello J.C.
I don't know what is worse having this condition all the time or having sporadic attacks. I suspect the latter. If you have this condition permanently you know what you must do on any given occasion.
I can't tell you what to do except not to think of other people. Yes they are probably thinking 'what's wrong with him' but they do think it for the right reason. When you were 'able bodied' you probably thought the same. A lot of people don't know how to handle people that are 'diffferent' but they mean no harm.
I tell people about my condition and I find it helps.
By forcing yourself you make yourself worse. Try telling yourself, everything is fine and I'm going to enjoy myself. If people have a problem with you or your condition it is exactly that theirs.
Please don't think you are alone because you are not.
Regards
Carol

Hi JC, I know exactly how that feels, I am always very depressed for a week after an 'episode' it makes it very hard to go out and act normally so I usually only go out when I am with friends that I feel 'safe' with - that is who know my history and can spot the signs of an oncoming episode. I am very grateful though that my ataxia is episodic so I don't live in a constant state of ataxia but I have minor symptoms all the time.
