My vision became seriously affected with the ataxia as did my speech. Speech problems are a common symptom with ataxia but I'm not sure about the vision.

Hello Faye,

I am 45, and have had double vision for around 10 yrs. I wasn't surprised by that, because my dad had told me that he had double vision. I learned that if I close my left eye, (my left is weaker than my right) I can see better. Now I know why dad always closed one eye!

I'm 57 and have noticed a marked change in vision these last few years. I think most of it is due to cataracts; but lately I have trouble focusing, and I think that may be d/t the ataxia. The problems are worse when I am tired. The newest development is a real sensitivity to bright or florescent light. Out side on a sunny day is a real challenge!

Hello Faye
I have worn glasses all my life and struggled with my eyesight. Forceps were used when I was born, they slipped and severed the sight muscle in my left eye.Not that you would no!!
I can't mange without spectacles, everything is blurred.I had an eye examination 2 weeks ago and the optician said the change wasn't worth bothering about. He said any change was as a consequence of age not my condition. I do need reactalite lens because I no longer get on with bright light.
That said we are all different and this condition affects us all differently.

Hi Faye,
I can't speak for other ataxians,but when I visited my opticians he commented on my eyesight deteriation since last visit.
I've noticed my vision is blurred and bright light also causes me problems.
I've come to the conclusion that with me it is my ataxia,but as I'm 56 it could be age related as well
