Hi Nati

I drive an automatic using hand controls. If you click on 'Forum' (Top of page) and go to page 55 there is a long discussion on Driving and Ataxia. Bill xx

I had to have lesons again when I needed an adapted car,  the first time they failed me for looking in the mirror too much (I'm deaf.. I was trying to see what the examiner was saying without taking me eyes off the road)  I continued lessons to try again and did complain about the examiners lack of deaf awareness,  but shortly after was struggling with the 2 hour lessons my arm would start to shake quite alot trying to hold onto steering wheel with one hand and brake/accelerator with the other.

I relaised I wouldn't pass the test again as they have you do a 2 hour lesson before the driving exam and I knew  wouldn't be able to stop my arm shaking. I did think of asking if I could just do the test without the lesson and hope the test finished before my arms started to shake but then I couldn't afford the van I needed anyway which was a £10,000 deposit!   So I gave up on the driving and decided to just get a van when I needed a full time helper and had someone there all time to drive me.

The money I've saved in petrol,  road tax, car adaptions  etc will hopefully buy me a decent chair when I go to my next seating assessment for electric chair with more seating support.

Unfortunately, I had to stop driving in 1991--boy, that's 20 years ago!   I would come to a stoplight, with my foot on the brakes, but, my foot would really shake!  I didn't want to be a danger to myself, or, anyone else on the road.

So, I bailed out of driving--sold my car & stopped driving--riding with friends or taking the bus is so much safer!   (I  have "Spinocerebellar Degeneration, a neurologic disorder, with major ataxia!)  But, I  DO  miss driving!

Hello

I have a full drivimg licence but choose not to drive. The car is not adapted and I feel I would be a risk to others. I couldn't live with myself if I was the cause of an accident.

I passed my test first time after ten lessons and have driven ever since, I do miss it. Never mind, I make do with my scooter which takes me where I want to go. If I go further afield I am driven.

Regards

Carol

I drive however last year in May I got into a traffic accident the police made me do the walk test and said I was drunk. He threw me into the back of the police car and called in a achol unit to bring in a breath analizer.

When I told him I had a medical condition he did not believe me. Then I passed the breath test and they found I was not drunk. Finally he called my doctor and he said that he was treating me. The police officer was so mad that he wrote me a request to be evaluated to have my licence revoked. I went to DMW corrections and saw 90 year old people with walkers gettting their licence renewed. I passed with flying colors and am good until 2013 when I will need to take the test again.

However I hate to have big trucks next to me on the highway. I do drive slower and brake with caution. Basically I'm a more prudent driver than I use to be. Before I was a fast driver. Now days it's obey every sign and 4 car distance on the Hwy. You can do it! Just take it easy and be cautious!

I still walk like a drunk that hasn't changed however remember that I have SCA!

Hi Nati......

Yeah I drive and have Ataxia. I have mailed/spoken to afew people who have Ataxia and drive too. I drive a manual car with no adaptations, though some people may drive a car which has been adapted to suit them.

Good luck
