Today I went to motor vehicle and brought the form my Dr filled out and recieved a handicapped parking placard. I've put it off, but I realize how in certain situations I need it. Is it available in the UK?

I had an opportunity to get a sticker for the disabled parking permit. I had the paperwork done and every thing and decided not to sent it in. I though my situation was just very temporary but --nope. i was naive and stupid and should have got it when I had the chance. I am not so sure that I qualify now because I am doing better but winter around here is brutal and I am sure I will wish I had it in a few more months..

Also I think as an international site it is difficult to know which terms are offensive, as Jason said we don't use the term handicapped over here anymore, but I have also done it when I talked about 'fits' which I had as child on one site and was told it was offensive as they are called 'seizures ' over there. However my family and even doctors always referred to them as 'fits' to me and thats not considered offensive over here.
personally i hate it when someone says 'bless you' I find it really patronising but have had to accept that some people consider it like a social saying like 'how are you' or 'thats great, I'm happy for you' or 'you do really well' so I just have to bite my tongue and remember the person doesn't mean it in a patronising way.

I had one when I had an helper but now i live further from town and on my own. When I can afford the taxi fares or have to go cos of bank I go by taxi so I can take electric chair as its all hills and family members work full time so they at work mon-fri through day. so I didnt bother to get it renewed, if i get another helper and a van for them to drive though I will reapply, though half time the spaces are nicked by people who walk, with no walking aids or wheelchairs.

I was glad to get my "placard". It lets other drivers know that they need to "back off"!

Like Carol mentioned JC the Blue badge allows the person to park on yellow lines in the UK. Scotlands time limits differ from England though. As Carol said, you can use the badge allowing you to park for up to three hours in England. In Scotland you can park all day so you don't have to worry about having to return to your vehicle before the time runs out.

Hello JC
I presume the word is 'handcapped'. I don't mind and certainly take no offence. I've been called worse. What's in a name?
Over here we refer to it as 'a blue badge' it's very handy, it allows you to park on the yellow (no parking) lines for 3 hours. Doesn't stop you getting a ticket though - as Andrew will testify!! He parked on the lines in an unloading area, very naughty and a 'hands up' job!! Over here we have a system for fines (at least where I live has) wereby if you pay within so many days the fine is reduced. Needless to say, we paid it quick!
I hope (Ataxia apart) that all is well with you
Take care
Carol
