Help! I seem to be going around in circles trying to sort this out (ahead of time) as usual.

My daughter is starting school in Sept. How do I get her there and home again? I can't drive and my husband has to be at work by 8.00am. All I can find is a transport service set up by the local authority which will take children ( as a large group, on a minibus) to the nearest /catchment school to where I live. Where does my choice of school come into it? My daughter has leukeamia so also doesn't fit the 'norm' . Any ideas or suggestions as to what to do or where to go for help would be greatly apprieciated. It would be one less thing to worry about and try and organise before the day it's actually needed.

Thanks, any ideas would be great.

I know exactly how stressful this can be.

I am a committee member for Community Transport Association Wales, and have heard this issue aired quite a few times.

The LEA or Social Worker/social services, should offer advice (or services)

I know (in my local area) I have seen minibuses and taxis, doing the school run along side the "regular", school bus, to transport any individual who has particular requirements.

You might look into the Local aurthorities, voluntary organisations, (and if there is, in your area) a country cars, that provide a similar, service.
KEEP us informed, how you get on.

I saw a disabled couple on TV once bth in wheelchairs, their son was also in wheelchair, they used direct payments to have an helper to come in and help them get him ready for school. Maybe you could check out that route and then they would take the child then pick them up, or if you child has friends nearby could their parents collect her and take her with their child?
Hello Alison
Where I used to live there was a boy who I think was educationally challenged. He had a taxi to take him to school. I don't know the 'in's and out's and I certainly don't know why. I would think this was arranged by Social Services or perhaps the school. Have a word with them. They both have a vested interest. Don't forget to tell them about yourself.
Hope all goes well.
Take care

Thanks to all who gave me ideas. I will see if I can find anything out at her school first. Child services have come up with something called 'Portage' but I can't see how it relates to transport at all. I am still trying to sort it out and will let you know if I get anywhere. Thanks again, Alison
Portage is like home schooling. Though I'm sure it has evolved since the 80's when I worked (work experience from college) with a 3yr old with Downs syndrome who was on a 'Home Portage Program'.

There is a website now for it
http://www.portage.org.uk/

Is that what they mean?
Hi Allison, if you speak to your local council and ask to be put through to school transport, they SHOULD help or at least know who you need to speak to. It depends on the local criteria as to what help you get and whether you need to contribute.

My daughter goes into school for 2 hours of 1-1 tuition a week. The local LEA pay for a taxi to take her to and from the school. A word of warning, it can take ages to set up and you may need to make repeated requests so be persistant. They will usually want to see proof as to why they need help with transport. Your doctor or health visitor should be able to help with this. I hope you get the help and advise you need, as you say it's one less thing to worry over! Take care
