Living With Ataxia - Online Support Group

On the night's that I do manage to sleep, I don't seem to get a refreshing sleep.  I have on average 9 hours a night.  This makes the dizziness I suffer from even worse, I seem to be spending the entire day with my head spinning, and am so tired.
Am in the middle of changing doctors as I have no trust in my current gp, so could be a while before I can see a gp.
Any suggestions of what I could try in the meantime?

I have tried those night all tablets before thats advertised on TV. Sometimes if you too long in bed you arent getting refreshed sleep if you arent tired enough to get into deep sleep stage quickly. Are you tossing and turning? or can still hear all noises etc and not really asleep?
I am tossing and turning - deep down I think I know I need a new mattress, but can't afford it!
Hello Jeanette
Have you thought you may be over tired? I know it sounds silly but it is true, you can be too tired to sleep properly.
Try and pace yourself and have a nap around midday, for about 1 to 11/2 hours. When you get up do something else or finish what you started in the morning.Go to bed around 10 to 10.30.
If you think your mattress is to blame and for whatever reason a new one is out of the question consider a mattresss topper. I don't know prices but it shouldn't be hard to find out.
Don't feel bad about resting, do what is right for you.

Carol
I think that is the secret - not feeling bad about resting during the day!! Guilt has a lot to answer for!!
Hello Jeanette

Hello Jeanette
If you do consider a mattress topper don't confine yourself to furniture shops who will be expensive. I saw a foam memory mattress topper in what used to be Co-op Homemaker, it was reasonable. No doubt the Co-op or any good superstore will have them.
Hope you are alright.

I have just recently been to see my GP about a number of things. One of them was about my problem getting off to sleep. I too have been feeling constantly 'worn' and often tired throughout the day lately.

Medication from the doctor would be both very powerful and very addictive. So, my GP recommended I not get such medication, but ask my chemist for an over the counter 'sleeping aide' - there are many available.

I opted to try a rather well known brand. On my first attempt, the tablet worked a charm as far as getting off to sleep, the next day was horendous though. I felt sickly, tired and irritable all through the day. I will try the tablet one more time at a later date to see if I have a bad reaction or if my previous reaction was a 'one off'.

I have a memory foam mattress (much better for me than other types) and I knock off all but my 'modem router' as I go to bed. The lights of the 'modem router' are masked out. So, I have no noise and no light and a comfortable bed. I just do not get off to sleep easily.

As it happens I have always been able to 'function' on a little sleep per night. It's just that I know I function a bit better on a decent amount of sleep. Alas, I believe it is true when my doctor says 'There is no remedy set in stone and everyone is different regarding sleep'.

For me, an afternoon nap can sometimes help, but more often makes things worse!

I am not moaning about the problem, I just wanted you to know you are not alone with it!

Best regards,

Michael.
Thanks

Thankyou Micheal
I don't feel alone now I guess having Ataxia for so long I have been left to 'get on with it' I thought I was the wierd one as all my family without Ataxia often become tired later than myself but need more sleep than me. Thanks again but I think I will visit my GP as I havent seen him for a few years.
