Living With Ataxia - Online Support Group

Hello everyone

This is for people that have an interest in horses. Do you still ride, if so how? I have decided that riding is not for Ataxians. Mounting can be overcome with a platform of sorts. It's a long way down if you shoot across the horses back!! The really hard part is staying upright when the horse gathers speed and takes on uneven ground. Even with good core muscles this is difficult if not imposible. We need a saddle with a high back at least for trotting.

Once off, how do you find your leg and thigh muscles!

I am pursuing 'Riding for the Disabled', so far I have drawn a blank, this activity has been for children but I will keep going.

Regards

Carol

Hello everyone
The spelling of Riding has been corrected on the main post.
I will get a keyboard that doesn't stick - promise.
A keyboard that sticks and Ataxia do not go together!!

I used to work for Riding for Disabled many years ago.

We mainly had kids and some adults but usually who had severe physical and learning disabilities.

For children sometimes we had to ride on horse with them so they were infront of us this worked with small kids but obviously two adults be too heavy for some horses.

You can get special seats, I saw them been used on the BBC program 'Beyond Boundaries' where a group of young adults with varying disabilities trek across peru/africa etc.

Here's one pic I found on internet, I think was was custom done for someone. (so expensive)

You would have to find your nearest Riding for Disabled and ask what saddles they have available

Hello Katie
Thank you. I have e-mailed the RDA near me and am awaiting a reply. The saddle looks good!
My OT rang this afternoon and was told about my idea of horse riding. She thought it would be good.

Carol

You go, girl! That is so cool, Carol. Way to make something good happen!
Be sure to have someone take a photo, and post it, ok? Enjoy your new adventure.

Hello Lorinn
Thank you for your kind comments.
I can't wait, it really is an adventure. I'll keep you informed.
Mind you I have fallen before having Ataxia so I don't hold out much hope. When I came off the last time (thank you motorist) I swear the horse was laughing!!!
I trust you are well (Ataxia apart)
Take care
Carol
